A bit about eelgrass: it is one of our most important nearshore habitats in the Salish Sea. Healthy eelgrass meadows can provide habitat and refuge to hundreds of species, from juvenile salmon and rockfish to Dungeness crabs, herring and tiny invertebrates. It can also build climate resilience by sequestering carbon, stabilizing sediments, and buffering local effects of ocean acidification. The two main drivers of eelgrass habitat decline are climate change and coastal development.
